Curatorial text

I spent some time looking at this photograph, both before and after editing it. I found myself seeing different things: fear, submission, respect, control, learning. Each time I returned to it, something shifted. Yet there was never any sense of pity or inferiority. With each new look, the idea of learning grew stronger.

What I see is someone paying close attention to an experience that still needs to be understood. There is a difference between occupying a subordinate position and recognizing that someone else has more experience. Where you begin does not determine where you will end up, just as starting later does not mean you are destined to go less far.

This is where learning by example becomes important. “Do as I say, but also do as I do” brings together two ways of teaching: words and practice. When the two are consistent with each other, the person learning receives more than an instruction. They receive a concrete example that can guide their first steps without determining the ones that follow.

I think about this when I look at the continuity of Nego Fugido. Year after year, one generation encounters another that already knows the practice and can pass it on through the act of doing it. There is admiration, respect, and regard in that relationship. Those who come later watch those who came before, learn from the experience handed down to them, and may change it in turn. The difference between them marks only the beginning of each journey.

I also think about a parent’s wish for their child to have a better life than the one they had. Perhaps this is one of the simplest ways to understand what is passed from one generation to the next: giving someone else what was hard-won so they can start from a better place and go further.

That is what I find in “Moon Eye.” The brightness in that gaze concentrates an attention directed toward what is still to be achieved, enjoyed, learned, and changed. After so many readings, what stayed with me was neither fear nor submission. It was the idea of someone watching, recognizing experience that came before, and finding in it an opportunity to learn. The starting point may be different. The destination has yet to be built.
