The Other Side of the Ground

For anyone who sees the ground only as the place where a fall ends, there is mercurochrome, a bandage, maybe a scar. But the same ground holds another possibility, one where an interruption becomes momentum and the body discovers that its relationship with gravity does not have to end with impact.

Skateboarding has understood this for decades. Its culture grew from a particular relationship with what the city offers when architecture becomes more than something built and turns into a surface for experimentation. Concrete pushes back against the body and demands precision. Each attempt carries something forward from the one before it. Failure is no longer an isolated event; it becomes part of a growing body of knowledge.

Clichés about overcoming adversity tend to sanitize pain. They make discomfort easier to accept by offering ready-made narratives that turn defeat into something immediately virtuous. The reality is harsher. Some days, persistence simply means returning to the same place, admitting that you still cannot do it, and trying again. Something takes shape in that process.

Perhaps what skateboarding teaches has less to do with winning than with our relationship to what we have not yet learned to do. Excellence grows from an almost obsessive awareness of one’s limits, from listening to the body when it fails, and from continuing without allowing persistence to become blindness.

Skateboarding entered the Olympic Games with a history that long predates the Olympic institution. In Paris, it once again brought competition, culture, and spectacle together before massive audiences, while the sport has already reached tens of millions of people around the world.

Maybe that is why a fall can lift you higher. The body hits the ground, learns something from it, and returns to the space changed by what it has just discovered. Perhaps the other side of the ground is simply the place where falling still leaves somewhere to go.
