The School of Falling

 In Patrimônio Prospectivo (Prospective Heritage), falling has been moved from the physical event itself into a broader realm of human experience. Falling belongs to the body, but it also reaches into what changes within us when an expectation meets its limit, when an attempt fails to take shape, and when desire must survive its own interruption.

There is a school without walls, curriculum, or diploma, where knowledge arrives marked by experience. The body learns to recognize the ground, measure fear, endure frustration, and return to movement when it has not yet found a way to make it happen. Each repetition carries something from the one before it. Error remains inscribed as a kind of acquired intelligence, silent and embodied.

Scrapes belong to the surface of this story. More deeply, what remains is what they leave in consciousness. Failure loses its finality when the mind discovers that it can still try.

Perhaps prospecting begins at this almost imperceptible moment, when a fall does not bring a trajectory to an end but returns to desire the possibility of continuing. The future passes through this small event, in which someone gets back up without knowing how many more times they will still have to fall.

There is a particular kind of hope in this movement. Not the hope that promises victory, but the one that remains when victory does not yet exist. Experience turns the ground into knowledge and returning into possibility. Falling, then, ceases to be merely what interrupts movement and becomes part of what makes movement possible again.

It is in this nameless school that the body learns one of the most difficult forms of freedom: continuing without any guarantee of what the next step will bring.
