Postgraduate Degree

There are moments when practice demands a kind of diploma that no institution can award. For Fernanda Galdino, failing to complete a trick at such a young age can carry that kind of value. Not because failure itself needs to be celebrated, but because every attempt leaves something behind in the body that keeps pushing forward.

I am a staunch believer in academic education and see traditional study as the foundation of a solid education. Perhaps that is why this photograph speaks to me so strongly: it brings two forms of learning together without diminishing either one. What I see here is a desire to win, effort, and dedication. The ease in her expression, her thankful posture, and the skateboard moving with Fernanda give the scene a sense of confidence that goes beyond the outcome of that particular attempt. The journey matters because that is where ability takes shape.

The photograph belongs to Gravity because the interrupted trick does not look like defeat to me. Her body has already taken flight, and the ground seems almost irrelevant. A physical relationship sustains a broader reading: to reach a certain height, we must accept the force that first pulls us downward. We fall to rise.

I watched the entire sequence and have it documented. So this reading is not based on any prediction about Fernanda, but on what I witnessed throughout the sequence of images. I see a talented young woman, still very young, with a great deal of work ahead of her. Talent does not develop on its own. It needs to be shaped through dedication and perseverance before it can become more than a latent ability and begin to form a path of its own. That possibility of transformation is what I see in this moment.
