Eye to eye

Makala is at a particular point in his life. Still close to his uncle, Pantaneiro, he is approaching adulthood, when their relationship will inevitably change. That fact serves only as a starting point for something harder to define.

I have a sequence of images in which Makala looks directly at me. There is no mistaking where his attention is directed. What I cannot know is why. It could have been curiosity, an interest in me, or attention to something I had not noticed myself. His extended, retractable claw raised another possibility. Perhaps it had something to do with what had caught his attention. Perhaps he was using it for support. Perhaps it had nothing to do with the situation at all. The idea of an attack, given everything I have experienced in the Pantanal, is more joke than possibility. I have never witnessed anything like that there.

What remains is an imbalance of knowledge. I know Makala was looking at me because the sequence makes that unmistakable. I do not know what that look meant to him. Spending time observing a jaguar allows me to learn about an individual, follow his history, recognize behavioral patterns, and become familiar with his presence. None of that gives me access to the animal’s experience. Knowing does not eliminate the unknown.

That distance is what interests me about the photograph. Makala’s gaze establishes a direct relationship with me, but offers no explanation for it. The image records a situation we shared without telling me what either of us understood about the other’s presence. What I see is shaped by what I already know about Makala, while what he perceived remains beyond the photograph’s reach.

For that reason, Eye to Eye does not try to turn the encounter into certainty. The photograph leaves open a question about the limits of knowledge when the other exists within an experience we cannot directly enter. Makala looks at me. I can record that look. Why he did it remains his to know.
