Territory

Territory begins with recognition. A place acquires meaning through the lives that inhabit it, through repeated movements, familiar boundaries, and the awareness of who else shares the same ground.

The herons occupy the landscape with a precise sense of distance. Their positions suggest an understanding of space that requires no visible boundary. Each presence becomes part of the way the others move, settle, and remain. The territory emerges through this constant awareness.

Human life is shaped by similar forms of spatial perception. We learn where we belong, where we can enter, where we should pause, and when another presence has already claimed a space. Much of this knowledge operates quietly, without rules written down or boundaries clearly marked.

Territory is the space we learn to recognize through presence. It is shaped by every life that inhabits it.
