Curatorial text
Some things seem impossible only until someone decides to do them. Youth, personified here by athlete Vicente Rigobello, has a particular relationship with that boundary: when faced with difficulty, young people have not yet accumulated all the reasons experience tends to gather for explaining why something will not work. They look, calculate what they can, trust their own momentum, and go for it.
That is how I received this trick. Not as a display by someone unaware of his limits, but as an assertion from someone who still refuses to accept those limits as final. There is a kind of youthful confidence in putting the attempt before the doubt. The question stops being “Is it possible?” and becomes “How do I do it?” The difference may seem small, but it completely changes the way we approach a challenge.
In skateboarding, gravity establishes a very clear rule. What goes up must come down. What loses its support has to find a surface again. For a few moments, however, that rule seems suspended. The trick creates its own logic, and what should be a fall becomes control. The difficulty does not disappear. It is confronted.
Perhaps that is what fascinates me most about youth: the willingness to experiment before accepting that something is impossible. There is energy to try again, courage to fail, and an almost insolent confidence in the possibility of succeeding. It does not always work. When it does, however, those watching have to rethink their own sense of what is possible.
The photograph is born from that instant when an attempt becomes an achievement. What seemed excessive becomes concrete before our eyes. For a few seconds, the impossible loses its authority.
And perhaps that is skateboarding’s great provocation: someone believes they can do it, goes out there, and does it. Then all that remains for the person watching it is the simplest and hardest task of all: to stand there open-mouthed.
