Curatorial text

Youth has a particular way of confronting what seems impossible. It has not yet learned to respect every limitation that others present as self-evident. Instead of backing away from difficulty, it experiments. It tries. It falls, gets back up, and tries again. There is energy in that, but also a kind of freedom from doubt.

In this photograph, that freedom reaches its limit. The trick demands enough confidence to abandon, for a few moments, the usual relationship with the surface and find another way to keep going. What looks like loss of control to someone watching is, for the person performing it, a sequence of decisions made with precision.

That difference is precisely what interests me. At first, the scene gives the viewer the impression that some rule has been broken. Then it becomes clear that nothing happened by chance. Audacity did not replace technique. Confidence did not eliminate mastery. The athlete had to know exactly how far to go to make something that, to anyone watching, seems impossible look effortless.

There is something particularly powerful about youth because it is still willing to challenge what has already been accepted as a limit. It does not mean believing that everything is possible. It means refusing to accept impossibility before trying.

The most interesting part comes afterward. The athlete lands, regains his balance, and keeps going. For the photographer, what remains is the suspended instant, that fraction of a second when logic seems to have been interrupted and the image holds a moment the eye can barely follow.

Perhaps that is why photographing skateboarding is also a way of photographing the human capacity to surprise. Someone simply decides to go for it. They do what seemed impossible. And for a few seconds, everyone else is left trying to understand how it just happened.
