Grounding the sacred

There is a moment when the sacred loses its distance. It descends from the realm of symbols and meets the warm body, where faith ceases to be an idea and takes on weight, temperature, pores. Sweat marks this change. It does not adorn the skin; it comes from it. It is the quiet mark of a presence subject to the elemental laws of flesh.

The necklace introduces another dimension. Against the skin, the object carries a different kind of weight, as though it held a memory older than the body that supports it. There is no need to name the mystery in order to recognize it. Some things belong to the realm of the sacred precisely because they resist explanation.

Perhaps the photograph takes place at this point of friction. The human body receives the signs of devotion without disappearing beneath them. Sweat remains. Skin remains. The sacred meets the body without purifying it of its earthly condition.

Here, however, there is no attempt to repeat either of them. There is another possibility: to allow the image to find its own substance. Sweat returns the sacred to the earth. Skin offers it a surface. The symbols hang suspended above a breathing body.

The sacred, then, is not above humanity. It is within it.
