Pantanal Revealed: the Soul of a Territory Exhibition

There are journeys that stay with us as memories, and there are others that change the way we see the world. For me, the Pantanal belongs to the latter. I arrived expecting to come home with a few photographs and the memory of an extraordinary experience. I returned with images I’m proud of, but also with the certainty that this place had changed something in me.

I had never experienced life with such intensity. There was no need to look for anything extraordinary. It was everywhere: in the water reshaping the landscape, in animals appearing and disappearing among the vegetation, in the cycles of nature, in the people, the horses, the celebrations, the silences, and the waiting. All I had to do was look. Nowhere else have I felt so strongly that life keeps finding a way to begin again.

These photographs grew out of that experience. At first, I wanted to record what I encountered. Then I realized that photographing was another way of staying attentive, of trying to understand something that always exceeded what was in front of me. No single image could contain the entire territory. Each one could, at least, hold on to a part of what the place made me feel.

I’ve always believed that no one comes back from a journey exactly as they left. I came back from the Pantanal changed. Some things in my life changed in very tangible ways; others were harder to put into words: the way I look, the way I wait, the way I value the everyday, the way I understand certain places, and the way I recognize where I feel most alive.

That’s why I’ll keep going back. I’ll return with emotion, and I’ll return with a camera. Not to find the same Pantanal, because I know there is no such thing as returning to a place in exactly the same way. The landscape will keep changing, and so will I. Every visit will bring a different perspective, a new chance to discover something I wasn’t able to see before.

This exhibition grows out of that relationship. It isn’t meant to explain a place or present a definitive collection of images. It is a record of an encounter that began as a journey and ended up occupying an unexpected place in my life. Some experiences stay in our memories. Others change the way we return to the world. This one changed mine.
