Curatorial text
Every portrait involves a silent negotiation. The photographer arrives with an expectation; the person being photographed has their own way of presenting themselves. Clothing, posture, distance, and attitude all shape the image before any editing decision is made.
August Sander understood the social significance of appearance and circumstance. Irving Penn stripped away the surroundings to focus attention on the relationship between figure, pose, and form. Zanele Muholi brought collaboration into the very construction of the portrait.
During the Festa do Marujo Olho Vivo at Feira de São Joaquim, I came across a situation that made me think about this relationship. The photograph emerged during the celebration, without any prior plan to create a series.
Súbitamente brings together encounters in which the decision depends on the particular quality of a relationship. The point is not to establish a definition of the person being photographed, but to recognize the force a situation can acquire before the camera.
“Your Jaw Dropped” preserves the humor of that instant. The title works like a brief remark folded into the photograph.
Within A Boniteza do Retrato Estranho, this image shifts the question of beauty toward the construction of the portrait itself. Appearance matters, but so does the way a fleeting relationship can reorganize the photographer’s gaze.
